Joanna Recalma

Joanna Recalma is an unconventional mother, wife and lawyer. Her bloodlines include Pentlatch, 'Namgis, Haida, Icelandic and Chilean. Inspired by her grandparents and mentors, she roots for the underdog.

She mainly practices family law, but in a pinch, she takes on constitutional and civil law cases focusing on Indigenous rights to hunt, fish and live. Like a salmon, Joanna has returned home to the Qualicum reserve where she was raised on the Big Qualicum River.

Panikpak Letitia Pokiak

Panikpak Letitia Pokiak is from Tuktuuyaqtuuq located in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, of the Western
Arctic, NWT.

As an Inuvialuk, she was raised traditionally on Inuvialuit nunangat, which frames
her lens and worldview. She completed the MA Anthropology program at the University of
Victoria. Panikpak aims to support and
empower Indigenous Peoples in their sovereignty, rebuilding and well-being efforts.

Dr. Dorothy Kennedy

Dr. Dorothy Kennedy is an anthropologist and ethnohistorian specializing in the cultures and history of British Columbia’s Indigenous peoples.
Dr. Kennedy’s expertise relating to Indigenous peoples is relied upon by the Courts in deciding issues of
Aboriginal Rights and Title and by First Nations in regulatory matters, claims, and cultural revitalization
programs.

Her fifty years of fieldwork have included research among the K’όmoks, working in the 1970s
with the renowned Elder, Mrs. Mary Clifton. Drawing from this research, undertaken with her
husband/colleague, linguist and ethnographer Randy Bouchard, Dr. Kennedy will present “The Storied
Land of Plenty.”

About K’ómoks First Nation

The K’ómoks First Nation is located in the heart of the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. Membership is currently just over 300 members within four clans: Sahtloot, Saseetla, Ieeksun and Puntledge. Two cultures are identified within our community: Coast Salish (Island-Comox speaking peoples) and Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwak̓ wala speaking peoples). The K’ómoks First Nation originally occupied sites in Kelsey Bay between Campbell River and Port McNeill on Johnstone Straits, Quinsum, Campbell River, Quadra Island, Kye Bay and along the Puntledge Estuary—one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
